There’s a choice to die a superhero or endure long enough to see yourself as a villain,” the movie says in The Dark Knight. Today, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain–this time for Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is powerful, and the plot sticks to the comic-book plot as well and brings back fans’ favorite, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). There’salso the quirky humour unique to director Taika Waititi. Yet, Love and Thunder, although a strong standalone , doesn’t live up to the previous Thor installment, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a vital part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over 10 years, however his solo films have either missed the mark completely or missed the target. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a disappointing entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a good beginning. But, any list of top five MCU films should include Thor: Ragnarok (2017) absolutely. There was a lot of anticipation ahead of the release due to return of the Hemsworth/Taika Waititi partnership.
If Gorr (Bale) is a god who seeks to destroy gods after being cheated by one, chooses to striking New Asgard to steal the Stormbreaker, Thor has to stop the god butcher by forming a team with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who has changed into Mighty Thor. The story is straightforward, unlike in Marvel’s recent films, and the performances are excellent in the film. Hemsworth aces the titular character who is going through having a midlife crisis. However, Bale and Portman stand out. In a testament to Bale’s talents and his eminence, the pre-title credit sequence can be seen. Gorr could well have been the next Thanos for the MCU that’s in need of good superheroes, and Bale brings in a certain strangeness to the character but there’s not a whole amount more.
On the other one hand, Portman, who makes her reentry to the Marvel world after having been absent from the last two Thor films, is the cancer-afflicted ex-girlfriend of Mjolnir. Because of how Marvel is eager to hand over the roles of Hawkeye and, within a couple of months, Hulk, to women characters, I had hoped for that the Mighty Thor to be a similar checkmark on the representation checklist. The film tells an emotional tale of an astrophysicist that is able to show her biceps more than one.
Marvel also performs its own flexing through all the appearances. Apart from the entire Guardians of the Galaxy team we also have Matt Damon, Sam Neill and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor as well as Thor. We also see Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of the Asgardian play and the director of the play. Waititi, who as of Ragnarok has directed the Oscar-winning-Jojo Rabbit has returned to his preferred genre yet again. There are hilarious ideas such as the noisy goats, Korg’s narration of Thor’s story Thor breaking his legs, Valkyrie being the spokesperson for Old Spice…
The main premise is that Thor seeks his Mjolnir but is afraid of the jealousy of Stormbreaker. Unfortunately, these gags while effective, do so at the expense emotions and expose the wafer-thin plot as well. Thor: Love and Thunder explores a variety of types of affection, from father-daughter relationships to complicated romances between distant lovers… There is a parallel between Gorr losing his respect for Rapu and Thor becoming disillusioned at Zeus (played in this film by Russell Crowe). It’s all great ideas however…
There are many movie references like Harry Potter and Interstellar, as well as Easter eggs. A shot of Falligar who is the god of the dead, is shown, directly from comic books. We can see Hemsworth sporting the first Thor costume that comic-book readers recognize. When Thor is seen in a fight with Zeus He gets to look at a tattoo that reads ‘RIP Loki and the helmet of the trickster permanently engraved on Thor’s back. We’re introduced to the deadly Necrosword and given how Mjolnir and Stormbreaker appear to have an independent mind It’s fascinating to see more weapons being shown to possess the strength to control people.
We’ve seen this before with the ten rings from Shang Chi, the magical bangle in Ms Marvel, and the Ebony Blade from the post-credits scene from Eternals. After the show that Marvel recently aired, Moonknight, the line, “Gods will use you but never empower you” is a resonant line. A bit of Valkyrie’s loss in war to her greatest companion and Korg being a victim of another Kronan man is also mentioned.
We’re reminded of Ragnarok’s colour palette during the first part, but much of the second half takes place in the dark world of black and white. The fact remains that the monochrome action scenes are quite satisfying.
Hemsworth as Thor is staying though, and that’s an immense relief to MCU fans who’ve seen the first Avengers either sacrifice their lives or hang their boots.
